Scurvy (skūrvé) adj.
vile, contemptible, mean

The Scurvy Few Motorcycle Club of the Bahamas,
founded in 1998, is the the only charter Motorcycle Club in the
nation. The brainchild of six individuals (pictured above) in Marsh Harbour, on
the island of Abaco,
the Club is the product of a mutual and shared love of
motorcycling. Our founding members are as diverse as the bikes they
ride: One Bahamian, Three Americans, One Canadian and One Frenchman
riding Harleys, Hondas, BMWs, Yamahas and most everything in
between. Our Freeport Chapter is well under way since getting their Chapter in early 2000, and our numbers are now collectively
over 30 strong.
Abaco island, the home of the Abaco
chapter, is the second largest Island in the Bahamas. The island is
approximately 125 miles long and about 20 miles at its widest
point. The town of Marsh Harbour where the home chapter is located
is the fastest growing area in the islands. Most of the roads are
now paved and a couple are even referred to as "highways".
There is a scooter rental company in town called Rental Wheels where
visitors can get two wheeled transportation. The club has put
out a safety brochure for people renting bicycles and
scooters, and we will gladly send you one at no charge if you e-mail
a request to our Treasurer.
Over the past several years, anyone reading
Bahamian national newspapers would be aware of the increased
negative publicity regarding motorcycles, especially in
Nassau. It seems that almost every month there is a motorcycle
related accident, usually resulting in a fatality. The
non-motorcycling community, which is the overwhelming majority of
the population, generally views the motorcycle as being fast,
reckless and a danger to anyone else on the road. In fact,
authorities and law enforcement have arrived at the point at
which they have discussed the possibility of legislation
which would ban the further importation of motorcycles into
the Bahamas. We are doing and will continue to do everything in our
power to see that this never happens.
The SCURVY FEW Motorcycle Club Of The Bahamas is
committed to changing the negative image that the public has of all
of us. Through responsible riding and the good works that we do
within the community, we hope that the public will come to
realize that it is only a few idiots that are causing the
negative publicity. As a club, we understand the desire to have fun;
without fun, what's the point? However, there is a time and a
place for everything. By portraying ourselves as positive role
models, we hope to destroy the image of the motorcyclist as a
menace. Through education and awareness, maybe we can hope for
change. There is an old biker expression that goes "When we do
right, no one remembers, and when we do wrong, no one
forgets". Well, we are doing whatever we can to turn that
expression around, at least here in The Bahamas.
